Here's to another hundred and fifty years of MVCMA magic…. The evening begins with a community sing. The Grand Illumination of the Oak Bluffs Campground, better known as Illumination Night, sees the iconic gingerbread cottages of Oak Bluffs decked out with Chinese and Japanese lanterns. Illumination Night is a fun and beautiful Martha's Vineyard tradition whereby members of the "little house" community in the Town of Oak Bluffs collects and displays paper lanterns of every size and description. If you'd like to see Martha's Vineyard through my eyes, my family's historic Oak Bluffs gingerbread cottage is available for weekly rentals. Planning your own visit? At 9:00 pm the the street lights went out and the cottages sparkled with their lanterns and strings of lights. I love how the trees decked out in the fall color reflected in the water. The final song, "God Bless America" brought a sense of poignancy as I wonder what will happen to our great country in these trying days. By the next morning, it's like it never happened, with nothing but trampled grass and tired smiles to indicate anything is different. On Grand Illumination Night, the feeling is transformative and enchanting. But I do think it's pretty special to know how full circle we all came.
