The final reason was the book was so dense and so long, I am normally a fast reader I can comfortably read 600-700 words per minute and it took me two whole days of dedicated reading the push through Priory for what felt like very little payoff. The magic system is thoroughly explained, as are the dragons. A world crafted with such intricacy and detail, I had to remind myself it was not a real place. A lot of the books on the list are written by ownvoice or LGBTQ+ authors, but some just feature LGBTQ+ characters – just a little note for you all – though I tried to focus most of my recs on LGBTQ+ authors. This book features an m/m couple as the main characters, with a heavy focus on found family. It's a relief to feel seen. First of all, I like that the members of the female population featured more prominently in this book than their male counterparts.

The fact that I'm giving so few specifics is actually evidence of how many specifics there are, and how much I enjoyed them: nearly every event is a twist, and I would hate to spoil any of it. It's not a huge time jump, but you will not be with them traveling long from point A to B. However, Tane is able to recover her jewel from the Prioress' body and manages to escape Kalyba thanks to one of the Damsels with both the jewel and fruit. Ead, Sabran, and Niclays are all queer, though no sexuality is ever specified for any. While it's usually recommended to kill your darlings and cut out anything non-essential, this isn't meant to be so extreme. The third just wants to ride dragons.
