For this, I'm comparing Niktos in The Crown of Gilded Bones to Niktos in A Shadow in the Ember. I wouldn't recommend expecting a Hades and Persephone storyline here.

So, hearing that Sera's goal was to kill Nyktos was a little bit of a shock since we know that doesn't happen. And since it's a Jennifer L. Armentrout book, not a Sarah J. Maas book, I knew the initial love interest we met for Sera is Nyktos even if he doesn't go by that. So what Eythos did was took the ember from Nyktos and the remaining ember from himself, and put it into the Meriel bloodline. These particular Gryms are called Hunters, and the god presumes that they're after him. She also has the power to heal others and to take their pain from them. If you've read at least A Crown of Gilded Bones in the Blood and Ash series, you'll already know the outcome of this series as Nyktos states what happened. Holland confirms that all life in all the realms were only continuing to come into creation because of the Mierel bloodline carrying the ember, but now she is the only one who carries the ember, and is why life continues. My Thoughts: So I originally read this book when it initially came out, and I loved it so much that I had to re-read it again this time around. Once the siege is over, Sera waits in the throne room with Ector and Rhain for Nyktos to come back, since she wasn't sure how badly hurt he was in the battle. Well, we learn at the end of the A Shadow in the Ember that Sera has an ember of Life in her, and that mixed with a drop of Niktos's blood that she consumed while having sexy time with him, is basically going to make her a Primal in the next book.

What It's About: Seraphena Meriel, the last of the Meriel bloodline, was kept hidden for years after her birth. I spent the entire book wondering if she could ever really go through with it. There are people from the Blood and Ash series in this book and we get more of the history of the gods, the ascended and can compare the happenings in this series to what they become later in the timeline. Sera creating a new Primal, fulfills part of the prophecy. The Primal of Death, Nyktos, is captivating and powerful. The land of Lasania is dying; the blight as it has been called, encroaches on the land a little more everyday. He tells them that many people have dozen or hundred of possible outcomes depending on choices, but Sera had many strings, many different paths, all ending the same–with her death before twenty-one years of age. It was cute the first 5-6 times, then got old fast. He is tall and muscular, has red-brown hair and eyes that glow silver with ether.

When she starts to talk to him he asks her if she made her own decision and wanted to come with him instead, to which she says that she didn't, and then fights and kills him. When Marisol comes back to life, Ezra is so thankful, that she gives Sera a hug for the first time in their life, and keeps up her promise. Something that amuses Nyktos and he comments wanting to tell Sera about when Poppy meets Nyktos in A Crown of Gilded Bones. In the heated discussion, Tavius throws his bowl of grapes at her, bruising her arm, and the king kicks him out to talk to Sera on her own. There's tons of world building and back story which I love but sometimes it feels like too much. Armentrout soothed my wounds and quickly had me falling for Nyktos and Sera. He sounds like he's going to be something. In the middle of the novel, Tavius takes Seraphena, forces her onto her knees, and whips her. But they don't get far before Cressa finds them and a fight starts between Cressa and Bele. Right away there was a character that I loved and I was rooting for which got me interested. Sera helps him fight back, but freaks out when one of the hunters opens their mouths and there are snakes coming out of the mouth. Once the Coupers are buried, Sera cannot get them out of her mind, and is angry that there is a feast being prepared for the Rite, when it could be used to feed farmers for a month or two. Which, if it's Sera, she's a mortal, so of course something needs to happen to change that. Instead of being self-conscious, Seraphena uses her beauty to lure and trick enemies, and that is a brilliant scheme.
According to Holland, that is enough, and that considering the ember of life was strong enough to give her symptoms of the Culling, having the drop of a powerful Primal in Sera will push her into the Culling. Sera finally blows up and tells him to stop reading her emotions if he wasn't going to believe them anyway and then basically tells him that she's been trained to think and feel a certain way since childhood, so how dare he insinuate that what she feels is fake if for once feeling how she wanted to feel. And they…they felt right. Her step-brother, Tavius, enters the room. Something Nektas, one of Nyktos's drakens, points out as well. 5 out of 5-star rating.

I will never love you. They kiss, and that leads to other things, specifically Ash touching her until Sera basically falls apart underneath him from her orgasm. She spends her time reading, watching really bad zombie movies, pretending to write, hanging out with her husband and her Border Jack Apollo. They realize that Nyktos is in a precarious situation–he's lost so much blood he could become feral, primal–but he refuses to feed because he's been forced to do that until he killed.
Niktos brings up that Sera stabbed him at least a dozen times throughout the novel. She severs his head, and also gets onto the ship belonging to the Vodina Isles, and kills some more folks, before sending the ship on its way. When the audiobook first began, the voice of Sera was so similar to Poppy that it threw me. She must Ascend using Nyktos blood. He is cruel and loves to punish Seraphena. Long before she was born, her ancestor made a deal with Nyktos, the Primal of Death. She feels the deaths of the people on the ships, and Nyktos specifically clears up that what she is feeling is their souls separating from their bodies.
She might just be his undoing. Nyktos tells him that he should be on the walls, and there is a bit of tension between the two of them where Nyktos keeps telling Nektas he's fine, but Nektas knows better. Even though she finds she would never be able to go through with it. Ector does touch Nyktos and confirms what Sera says, so they're beginning to talk about why that may be, when Sera gets pain in her face. Her mother, step-father (Ernald), step-sister (Ezmeria "Ezra"), and Tavius enter the chamber. "You, " he said, his thumb moving in a slow swipe over the side of my throat. Holland says that Eythos was smart and wise, so he knew what would happen as the outcome of Kolis' actions, including that Kolis' powers would fade and that the realms would be affected by death. She is assaulted by three guards who were paid really good coin to try to assassinate her–this is the third time in as many months and she believes that Tavius is behind it because he hates her so much.
