Sam suffers tremendously, the school vultures close in around him and make him suffer for what he sees as the deliberate and selfish decisions of his brother. My brothers name is jessica chastain. When I heard about My Brother's Name is Jessica, I thought it could be an interesting take on the coming out genre, offering the perspective of a young boy whose sibling comes out as a trans girl. However, I do think any work that brings attention to the topic, and opens up a discussion, once its healthy and respectful, is a good thing, and so I will praise the book for that. This does not mean that Sam is a poorly written character. That's not healthy or helpful in my experience.

Normalize the acceptance and existence of trans people. Maybe 50 years from now attraction to non-living things would be considered normal as well. Among my most popular books are The Heart's Invisible Furies, A Ladder to the Sky and My Brother's Name is Jessica. That seems rather the point of this book, which is good, made by the author, who as far as I know is a good person, and doesn't deserve to be called transphobic and hated upon because he wrote something fictional which you didn't bother to read. So unless the title and synopsis are completely and utterly wrong, unless they have literally nothing to do with this book, I don't even have to look at the first page. Nevertheless I found it a moving story, intended for a young readership, of the effects on an affluent ambitious ultra respectable family of the elder child, aged 17, popular, sporty, high up the school pecking order, informing their wee brother, 13 year old Sam, dyslexic, low status in school, and high profile parents, that they are no longer Jason, but Jessica. He continues to reference Jason / Jessica in this way, even after the family has been told that Jessica is actually a girl, and wishes to be acknowledged as such. However, it will remain a one-star in my heart, because I believe harmful books deserve negative reviews, but maybe that's just me. Who wants to do something so limiting? Statistically there will be more family members of trans folk than trans people themselves. I really felt for Jason/Jessica, contending with the rampant intolerance and misinformation displayed here, most of which seemed incredibly old-fashioned. A novel is not a collection of averages distilled down into a narrative, or it wouldn't be called a novel. Published by Puffin, LONDON, 2019. It sidelines the trans character and also reinforces the idea that its terribly difficult to have a trans child/sibling, and it will be a universally awful experience. You would have known that, had you bothered to read the book, cover to cover. This is 2019 and read as if it was set 15 years ago. So please go read the book and give it the rating it deserves. I wanted to climb into the novel and shake his parents! This book has been heavily criticised by transgender community for its allegedly insensitive title and there are numerous one star reviews on GR from people who admit to have never even read the book! The title and the blurb scream that this is yet another story that uses our lives and struggles as the backdrop to talk about how ~hard~ it is for the cis people in our lives to deal with us. I'm too busy hoping my new doctor won't refuse to treat me, or wondering if small-town law enforcement thinks giving my real name and not my legal one counts as obstruction, to coddle a cis boy's feelings. 256 pages, Paperback.
