The Evil: Kenny and the bullies, they torture Owen every day for no reason other than cruelty. Kenny's brother is even worse, he was either going to drown or cut out Owen's eye if Abby hadn't intervened with no real plan of how they were going to get away with leaving a dead body or a mutilated, half-blind boy in a public pool. She was worried because I was bullied, too. Darkness Equals Death: - The finale pool scene starts out bright just like it was in the Swedish film but once the bullies come in they turn out the lights where the entire pool area let alone the pool is ridiculously dark as the violence is about to pick up. The sexual overtones of many vampire stories, including recent ones, in which the vampire bite serves as a stand-in or metaphor for penetration, undergo a radical shift in Let the Right One In. Alfredson's palette is so drained of warm colors that even fresh blood is black.

When I saw original film, "Let the Right One In, " it was at the Castro Theater in San Francisco. When Owen discovers Abby's a vampire he calls him for advice, only for his father to assume he's being manipulated by his mother and starts berating him for listening to her. Big Damn Kiss: Near the end of the film, Abby kisses Owen on the lips. Shortly after this, the man tries to drain the blood of an unconscious young victim in the woods. The first sign that she's there is the scream of primal rage she emits before she breaks through the skylight. This modern-day gothic story revolves around Oskar (KÃ¥re Hedebrant), a 12-year-old boy often bullied and tormented by his classmates, as he befriends the new next-door neighbor, Eli (Lina Leandersson). He may remind you of the boy in Bergman's "The Silence, " looking out of the train window. This is that kind of film, and yet, while the final product is indeed underwhelming, glimpses into what could have been break up a consistency in some degree of engagement value, or at least consistency in a considerable degree of artistic value.

I opened my mouth: "I won't take it anymore! " Muscle Angst: Implied with Owen. If the movie had taken place in modern-day, his punishment would have been much more severe. Asshole Victim: Owen's bullies. Oskar wants to kill as much she needs to. As Abby is the only person to treat him with kindness, he becomes completely devoted to her until hes willing to run away with her, despite the fact that this means hell be killing with her for the rest of his life. Considering how vicious and sadistic Kenny is towards Owen it's very hard to tell if he's making a sick joke or he genuinely means it. I didn't have answers. As Oskar becomes more aware of Eli's tragic plight, he cannot forsake her. They're just some sanitized fantasy of vampires. So while it's rather unlikely they had sex, it's still somewhat ambiguous.

It's changed from the book where Oskar was called "Piggy", which considering how Owen is as skinny as a reed wouldn't make any sense. I've always been a fan of a good vampire story but frankly they've often been a bit samey. When Abby sneaks into his bed naked he's shocked and doesn't do anything, later when they're alone in the basement and she asks him what he wants to do he breaks out into a nervous, goofy grin. The only real problem I had with this version of the movie is a potential spoiler, so stop now if you don't want to know. If you don't like them, you can wait a year and see the American remake that is in the works. Certainly the best horror i've seen since orphan. Boy Meets Ghoul: A charming story where the bullied boy meets a charming vampire when she moves in next door. Likewise, perhaps the most intriguing thread in the Lindqvist novel, effectively digested (yet toned down) in the Swedish film, is only to be obliterated in the flat, generic English remake (the vampire even wears uber cliche white contact lenses when she's thirsty... scaaaary). Ultimately it's subverted through a third option, as Owen's vampire lover comes to even the score.

Kenny is the main villain of the film, with Jimmy only appearing in two scenes and he attacks Owen at his brother's behest but it's shown he's much more dangerous and cruel than Kenny and the other bullies. Unfortunately, this works against him. Kenny, Owen's persistent tormentor and The police officer, who is investigating Abby's murders. Owen, an innocent, timid, gentle, boy who's victimized by nearly every other force in the film, from the bullies who assault him to his parents who neglect him. In one very short scene Oskar sees Lina naked. Oskar's emotional attachment to Eli conquers any sense of morality he may have.

The film quickly sank into poor reviews and oblivion. He waves his bloody hand at Abby, a vampire, whose instincts kick in and she very nearly kills Owen. I remember feeling blindsided and confused. While Kenny shows hesitation when it became obvious that Jimmy was planning on actually killing him, he was gleefully taking part in the assault beforehand.

Especially considering what he does to his face to keep Abby safe beforehand. Footnote: Jeremy Knox of Film Threat likes the film as much as I do, but comes from a different place. Also, some of the Swedish bullies only joined in due to peer pressure and didn't derive pleasure from it, while each American bully deeply enjoys causing Owen as much pain and humiliation as possible. This time, however, the camera follows his gaze upwards, into the heavens.

Bring My Brown Pants: In the remake, the bullies attack Owen until he wets himself. For Kenny, pretty much anything Owen does seems to send him into a violent rage, to the point that seeing Owen happy makes Kenny genuinely furious. It is also a painful portrayal of an urgent relationship between two 12-year-olds on the brink of adolescence. He then demands Owen shows him the letter, when he doesn't he proceeds to whip Owen with a metal antenna so hard then it leaves a bloody wound on Owen's face. The way the scene is handled suggests a fairly rigid conservatism in the town, and when juxtaposed with the romance between Eli and Oskar and Eli's vampirism, creates a more defiant antagonistic attitude toward them, and their "monstrosities", in the world the film inhabits. "A VAMPIRE TALE LIKE NO OTHER. Or does Abby genuinely love him and will turn him at a later point? Ax-Crazy: Kenny and his brother Jimmy. Hakan became Thomas. Man on Fire: Virginia again, although this remake shows it more gradually compared to the other versions. In his first scene, he knocks over the bottle of blood he had just gathered and nearly gets seen by a driver.

Stupid Evil: Kenny and his brother's attitude towards Owen. Blatant Lies: When Owen's mother demands to know where he's been after being out with Abby, Owen unconvincingly claims he's been in the courtyard the whole time. Oskar figures out that Eli is a vampire. He's even willing to pour concentrated acid over himself to protect her.

"Oskar, I'm not a girl. " Oskar reaches forward and taps out in Morse the word "P-U-S-S", which is Swedish for "love" or "small kiss". Puppy Love: The main plot of the film, concerning the growing relationship between a lonely 12-year-old boy and a girl who's been stuck mentally and physically at age 12 for centuries. Either way it somehow signals that Oskar no longer wants to be around him.

The Movie Let The Right One In

Sure, the quietness of our leads' performances reflect a certain laziness in character writing that holds the young talents back, but when material comes, Hedebrant and Leandersson deliver, as surely as Alfredson delivers as director when he finds the opportunity, and such performances aren't enough to make all that rewarding of a film, but they certainly go into crafting a decent film, just one that could have been more. Then he and his friends would follow me on theirs. Eli naked in bed with Oskar. This act of violent revenge has consequences that will change his life. The actress playing Abby (professional child actress Chloe Moretz who made a big splash in the film Kick Ass) looks far more female and more girly in this version of the story. In the beginning of the film he makes no effort to fight back as the bullies hurt him but, halfway through the film, he splits Kenny's ear with a metal pole when he tried to hurt him, and when they ambush him at the pool his first instinct is to grab his knife. When he looks up at Abby, he looks like he's in shock before he forms a trembling, very slight, smile. I assume they want to keep a distance and make a statement. Owen's father, meanwhile, hasn't even seen him for an undetermined amount of time and is also oblivious to his plight. Cruel and Unusual Death: It's mostly offscreen but this is what Abby does to the bullies, even tearing off one's head.

In their 6th after Thomas sacrifices his life to Abby she's grown so fond of Owen that she goes to him for comfort. Impossible Task: The sadistic test the bullies put Owen through in the pool. This implies that she is just seeing Owen as a replacement, and he is doomed to become a murderer who will eventually be replaced as well. Thomas's face is also horrifying to look at after he pours concentrated acid over himself.

He lives with his alcoholic mother, his parents are in the midst of a divorce and both are largely absent in his life, and every day at school he's abused, beaten and humiliated by bullies. The film is actually quite different from its source material, though that decision was a mutual one between Lindqvist and director Tomas Alfredson. In the book we find out (by way of a tender fable Eli tells someone she's about to suck dry of their blood) that she was the youngest, very beautiful boy in a poor family. Eli tells Oskar that he should stand up against the three boys who bully him. This isn't the story of a love that repairs a broken heart and smooths away the hard edges. US Release Date: 10-24-2008. Blood Oath: Owen cuts his hand and suggests this to Abby.
