However TWOTQ took a major departure from the more traditional love story many were expecting and people were NOT happy (including myself). But when the kingdom is attacked, I am forced to make choices I'm not prepared for. The War of Two Queens mentions a lot that Poppy stabbed Casteel in the chest, and that she likes to stab things. It wouldn't have been hard for Poppy to recount the details of the end of TCOGB to a general and feel totally natural. With a huge build up over the last 2 books of joining I felt like more of that was needed. Worth a read to get a satisfyingish middle / ending to current dramas if you love the characters. The siege on Oak Ambler goes well–there were many people who left but there were also many who were stopped from leaving by the soldiers on the rise. But Isbeth's minions capturing Poppy and crew before they even get halfway to the city? Just before this bit there was a confusing misnaming of who was doing which action. A curse put upon us by the mad king. Bringing them all back just to wipe most of them out instantaneously was such a waste. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.
She's clearly messed up, but there are glimmers of complexity in her choices, and in her own twisted mind, she loves her daughters enough to give up her heartmate. I honestly love her so much. When Violet inexplicably wakes thousands of years after a nuclear holocaust, she finds the world very different. Poppy has this fantastic plan to infiltrate Carsodonia, find Casteel, and free him with Isbeth none-the-wiser. I love all the fantasy elements and the amazing characters that fill the pages. The author tried to wax poetic through the joining and it came off as campy not very sexy. As with most fantasy series, the Blood and Ash series is best listened to in the order of their release.
