The writing isn't lilting prose or elaborate description, but simplistic and compelling, cutting just as deeply. All opinions are my own. The pacing of Ace of Spades is interesting. I also adored both protagonists.

Ace of Spades follows Chiamaka and Devon, the only Black students who attend the prestigious Niveus Private Academy. And it affects people who are white and working class, and also who are Black and working class. I really enjoyed reading her chapters. Can't find what you're looking for? This book kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat and I can't wait to see what Àbíké-Íyímídé has in store in the future. This stunning debut is a must read that deserves to become the next big thing. This was one of the latter. The characters never once engaged in academics, nor did academics ever play a role in the plot. This probably will not be a popular opinion, but sometimes simpler solutions to mysteries are more effective. But for the plot, no. I felt like I was holding my breath, getting ready for what would come next… only to be gasping out loud when I realized what was actually happening. The characters and the plot are the best thing about this book. I also liked how the story explores how class adds another layer of privilege, and this is exemplified in how Chiamaka, who grew up and lives in a rich neighbourhood and how it insulates her, versus Devon, from a poorer neighbourhood, differently navigate and perceive society and the spaces that they occupy. By the time readers get to the big reveals, the ultimate purpose of the book becomes shocking. The secondary characters, and there are quite a few of them, range from family to neighbors to fellow students and teachers, all who bring their own perspectives to the story. A YA mystery with shades of Gossip Girl and Get Out? There was a narrow focus on micro and macroaggressions but little levity needed to balance this story out. Let me know in comments! However, though the book provides much-needed representation of LGBTQ+ characters, as well as characters of color, the characterization itself is off, as a few of the characters read older than they are. I liked that there were dual narrators and they didn't try to do male/female voices when it came time for dialogue. Ace of Spades isn't "Get Out meets Gossip Girl", it's its own fucking story. By-and-large for both main characters, only their sexual relationships are really explored, and most of them are brief. "And so, there should be no surprise that the Head Prefect is none other than Chiamaka Adebayo. Author Q and A (I don't normally post this, but for this novel, I think it really adds to it). Speaking of isolated—this town, wherever it is, does not exist. Ace of Spades is an excellent book I think EVERYONE should read. "So, the rumors were true, " someone whispers nearby. She believes the end justifies the means and because of this all she's able to survive and even be called elite in her school. I listened to some of this as an audio book and read a print copy for the rest. Chiamaka was not the "Queen Bee" she was advertised to be, for as we see later in the novel, her status was manufactured the whole time. Quiet Devon was really the stand out for me, which is not what I had originally expected. Like I belong here, in this life, around these people.

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT, but Aces turns out to be a cabal of white supremacists who specifically target Black students, dating all the way back to the 1960s. The main characters, oh I loved them so much. There are no Muslim characters, and the only mention of religion is a side character reading the Bible. The complex comparison to Chi and Devon's daily life is profound, and seeing how racism can rear its ugly head in many ways is a theme that needs continual discussion. Teachers vote for their favorites each year, and it's always the same kind of person. Ace of Spades was a stunning, breathtaking young adult thriller I devoured and 200% recommend EVERYONE reads. He grows up in the "bad" part of town and lives in poverty. All Devon's little brothers did was watch television, all his mother did was cry, and all Chiamaka's dad did was cook.

Entirely selfish I know, but I would have loved it if Faridah would have expanded more on the ending and its time jumping epilogue, if only so I could have spent more time with the in-depth characters she created. It unpacks so much and is so intriguing and well-written, it was truly impossible to put down. Devon's character particularly touched me as Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé takes the time to show us what it means to be gay and Black for him. Gossip Girl meets Get Out in Ace of Spades, a YA contemporary thriller by debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé about two students, Devon & Chiamaka, and their struggles against an anonymous bully. His story is one that broke my heart and soul. In the same vein as Gossip Girl, an anonymous person reveals personal details about Devon and Chi that they'd rather stay hidden. A sign that maybe I'm gonna get into college—make my ma proud. There's a smug expression on her face as she joins us. But not only is Devon piss poor—something the author is so intent on emphasizing—but most, if not all, of his hardships are because he's Black. Perhaps the author should have simply made Niveus set in a fantasy world, since nothing about it is realistic anyways. Thank you to netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for a review. Not that people and characters have to be like-able, but they have a lot of layers, and it would have been nice to get to know them better as people, not just as shell minority representatives in a system built for them to fail. And the mystery is solved too quickly and too easily to be truly thrilling. Niveus Private Academy is described as an amalgam of British and American private school traditions and I understand the author wanted to appeal to an American audience but the story should've just been set in the UK.

This book highlights the toxicity that some friendships often possess too. It's an exciting, fast-paced book with examination of perception, prejudice, bullying, racism, and LGBTQ+ issues woven through a mystery thriller. Twenty minutes of my life about to be wasted on an assembly that could have been an email. As regard to her sexuality, this book was shelved by some as lesbian but its really not. "I hate how they have the power to kill my future, kill me. It's very, very good. "But I also wanted to show differences between Black people who are working class and upper middle class or extremely wealthy. The plot was fast when it had to be and slow when it had to be. So watching Get Out was really transformative for me. "Miss Cecelia Wright, Mr. Maxwell Jacobson, Miss Ruby Ainsworth, and Mr. Devon Richards. The creaking of wooden seats fills the hall as faces turn to glare at my attempt to shuffle through the rows. As a debut novel by a young author, the writing is obviously amazing. For the theme, yes I would. Early on, I felt that Mr Taylor was representative of people who are quick to say they're not racist yet remain passive in the face of outright discrimination.

This book definitely has vibes that can be closely related to Get Out, Gossip Girl, and Pretty Little Liars, but my oh my it's so much more. Sometimes I feel like I'm so lost in my own world, I don't notice the things that seem obvious to everyone else. But all I remember was looking at him and his date, hand in hand, and feeling this overwhelming sense of jealousy. You can't trust everyone around you and not everyone wants you to be safe. It is constantly described as a combination of Gossip Girl and Get Out, having never seen either of those, I relied on the back of the book and the inside flap to see if it was something I would like to read and suggest my young teenage daughter, (and followers to read).

ACTUAL RATING: Infinity stars*. Still, I call him a friend, because we've known each other forever and the thought of being alone is much, much worse. With the secrets getting more and more personal and with no sign of stopping, Devon and Chiamaka are determined to stop Aces at all costs.
