There's a theme of bullying in The Taking of Annie Thorne and Tudor doesn't shy away from or sugarcoat the harshness of the subject and the effect that it has on those involved. I devoured The Taking of Annie Thorne in one sitting, it had me totally hooked from page one and did not let up, this is the 2nd book I have read from CJ Tudor and I'm thirsty for the next!!! Her use of imagery throughout the novel really gave vivid visuals that really painted a picture. The plot so rich and inviting and scary at the same time. Joe has to face old friends and enemies, what they did in the past and what is happening now. A place he swore he'd never return to, but here he is, taking up a teaching place at the run down academy. Well paced and perfectly plotted with a time line that goes back and forth, but not excessively. Another absolutely brilliant book from CJ Tudor! Her characters, while never exactly likeable, are very real and leave us with the impression that we've met them before, or we know someone exactly like them. I didn't like this book at all - unlikeable characters, the typical alcoholic main man with lots of problems I can't relate to. Thank you very much for allowing me to read an advanced copy! But she wasn''t the same afterwards. Yet, I managed to devour this book in a handful of days at a time when that wasn't really the norm for me.

As the book goes on, the reader learns about Joe's little sister Annie, who disappeared, then came back different. This was the year his life started to spiral out of control. Why after so many years has Joe returned? Joe is a unique character. It doesn't take long for Joe to realise that Hurst is still the bully he has always been, and that his tenure at the academy is likely to be short-lived. Initially it is very unclear and only unfolds throughout the course of the novel. His CV is a little creative to say the least but he's quite charming and manages to secure the post. For the latter imagine Myron Bolitar dropped into the disused coalfields of Nottinghamshire. The book shares a lot of the same DNA as The Chalk Man, even referencing the novel's standout twist in a rather neat meta callout. He certainly lives up to his name by becoming a 'Thorne' in most people's side, with minimal effort on his part. Dolls, creepy kids and horror, equals heebie jeebies!! The Taking of Annie Thorne pays homage to King's Pet Sematary (although readers will be pleased to hear that no cats were harmed in the making of this novel), replacing the Indian tribe with an ancient druidic civilisation and transplanting the horror to the English Midlands.

Description of the book: Then... One night, Annie went missing. I totally loved this book and there were loads of twists and turns that I didn't see coming at all. When I first started reading this book, I wasn't expecting that this story would remind me of Pet Sematary. As for the twists and turns of the story nothing surprised me more than that ending!

I really can't wait to see what she serves for her next course! A sense of unease, a feeling of gathering dread, lurking in the background, creeping around, hiding in the shadows, a serpent ready to strike and the epilogue, well, the epilogue is fucking chilling. After only two books I am a massive fan and thoroughly enjoy the ease of reading her work, its written in real language and allows you to use your own imagination through the story; so much like Mr King. A place that once they go in it will never ESCAPE Them! Joe is a teacher and comes back to teach at his old secondary school. For a mystery/thriller this book contains fantasy aspects and no doubt that will be unpalatable to those wanting a no nonsense book from the genre, my advice would be to give it a shot anyway – I think the book is worth it. It is filled with a great variety of characters and unexpected plot, which held me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. I really enjoy this element of a book.

Her capturing of the UK in the 80s was also sublime. Has all you would want from a good read!! The characters were really well developed, and I felt a real empathy for some and a real loathing for others.
