Shelby Van Pelt: On the Power of Description, Platonic Love, the Conflicted Experience of Relationships, and Her Debut Novel, "Remarkably Bright Creatures". What's not to like about a historical tale partly grounded in truth about two giraffes' journey across the country to their new zoo home? Imagery of horses has a long history in the country, where the animals have been associated with strength and respected for their usefulness to humans. A widow, a young man on a mission to find the father he never new, the supermarket owner and an octopus all characters in this book searching for something. Her son disappeared without a trace when he was just 18. "Infused with heartfelt humor, Van Pelt's elegant portrait of a widowed woman who finds understanding and connection with a clever octopus is refreshingly, if surprisingly, relatable. I really appreciated the octopus graphic at the top of the first of every Marcellus chapter! Stories are supposed to have a twist, I know. This book is a top-rated pic for the Jenna Bush Hagar book club.

Remarkably Bright Creatures Questions

The chapters are divided into the three main characters' stories—Tova, Marcellus, and Cameron, told from their point of view. While I won't go into too much detail, I found this novel to be a quick read that was enjoyable to get through. I enjoyed Remarkably Bright Creatures a whole lot more than I ever expected to. I am far from an expert in this area of craft, but it's one of my favorite parts about fiction writing, so I'll offer a couple of exercises that worked for me. But would like to be more than a friend. Anyone who wants to believe that all of the thoughts and actions ascribed to Marcellus are in the minds of Tova and Cameron – in the same way that we all believe we know what our pets are thinking when we most likely don't – the story still works – and works well.

I am never usually thrilled with books told from animal points of view. When I finished Remarkably Bright Creatures it got me thinking, especially about Marcellus's POV in the story. It seems that every so often a contemporary fiction book comes along that's not in my preferred mystery/crime genre, a book that touches my soul, connecting with me on a special level. The story touches on friendship, love, loss and the threads that bind us.
