For once, a book is just as amazing as the cover. I have also heard great things abut Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad. I never doubted that he was stronger than he thought himself capable of (albeit sad he had to be), but he was so incredibly brave towards the end. This story emphasizes the importance of remembering the victims as humans, not martyrs or thugs. Periodic letters from Marvin's imprisoned father convey a poignant vulnerability, while Marvin's penetrating narrative voice captures the relentless anxiety and questioning that accompanies every choice he faces, from how to address Tyler's friendship with a local drug dealer to how to behave when witnessing police beat an innocent black teenager. "Gripping from the very first scene, Tyler Johnson Was Here is a powerful and vulnerable immersion into the lives of people who are too rarely given a voice. The difference between Marvin and the man who murdered his brother is that Marvin's story, though there was so much valid rage and sadness in it, still had love. The story follows Marvin, a boy whose twin brother, Tyler, goes to a party and never comes home. It didn't feel big enough to me while I was reading.

I am literally taking the heaviest of sighs, because I read a review that called the romance insta-lovey, and they totally missed the mark here. Tyler Johnson Was Here is moving and very relevant. She starts out at this mysterious girl Marvin sees at the party. I grew up in a small town in Germany and was told to trust the police. 5 Although this book was extremely enjoyable and fast paced, it felt a little disjointed and too fast paced for me. This doesn't make anything better as Marvin and his mother are mourning the loss of Tyler, so Marvin must learn what justice and freedom truly mean. Marvin is truly an inspirational character. While most of the novels I have read before focus on one specific event of police brutality, Coles shows several incidents, each one shaking you to the core alongside the characters. I have to admit that this is what first drew me in before the premise. Again and again, we hear the disturbing reports of police brutality, of people being murdered for nothing more than their skin color, or living in a dangerous neighborhood they lack the means to escape. Both deal with black teenagers deciding to protest over these deaths. Furthermore, I really wish the summary didn't reveal that Tyler was found dead seeing as how that scene wasn't revealed in the book until it was halfway over. Have you guys read this book yet? Marvin, who was being scouted by MIT for a college scholarship, begins a downward spiral that could only end with the clearing of his deceased brother's name as a wrongdoer. No justice, no peace.

While I thought that Marvin was a likable and relatable MC, I never really got emotional over the book like I expected to. The plot holes in this book drove me batty after a while. Emphasises the importance of relationships and community, and how they can be an anchor in trying times -- familial, friendship and unexpected friends, strangers standing in solidarity. This book is heartbreaking and all too real for too many young people. It's told from Marvin's point of view, and we get to see him experience atrocities such as having guns pointed at him, dealing with his wrongfully incarcerated father, his brother who he feels pulling away from, not to mention his brother missing for a large chunk of the book, and worrying about where his life will head next. This book will give you the feels, you will laugh, cry, and get mad. It had be locked in from the very first page. I really liked how Marvin's character developed throughout the story, he realized a lot about himself that he didn't before and even though it was a result of a horrible tragedy, he was able to, at least partly, piece his life back together. He was pretty naive and all "goody-goody", so I wasn't really feeling that. Even I could see that wasn't going to end well and it was a plot point for way too long.

I am happy to rate this book four stars, because it was thought-provoking and told a truly important story. Marvin is our narrator and he tells the story with an emotional connection that keeps you invested once the story really picks up. Ivy, G-mo and Marvin's friendship is beautiful, they are supportive and caring and I love reading about the three of them. Now, I know I said I was conflicted about writing this review, and I want to explain.

I hate the thought that children who should be carefree and playing with friends have to be educated by their parents about how to behave when the police stops them. The idea of a teenaged black boy being killed by a police officer is unfortunately nothing new, especially now. It was an amazing read, and I can only hope that with stories like this, more minds can be opened to the very real world problems we still have. Now y'all already know that I love reading books about social justice, and that's exactly what this book was. Their father is in jail, and Mama works extra hard to keep the family stable, leaving room for the influence of the streets to creep into their lives. The book has just a dash of romance, realistically written and it adds perfectly to the whole book.

It's not the first time I am tackling the issue of police brutality through fiction on my blog. Even then, her motives are a bit askew at first. But what starts as harmless fun turns into a shooting, followed by a police raid.
